Mountain Safety Council Photo Competition 2011

The Mountain Safety Council is delighted to announce that the photography competition for 2011 is now open. Please read the following information carefully and get snapping!

Prizes
There will be a first, second and third places awarded in each category (9 placings) all of whom will win a Mountain Safety Council prize pack and receive a special certificate of recognition. All winning photos will be published in the Mountain Safety Council OnTrack newsletter and may be used in future Mountain Safety Council publications.
The overall supreme winner will be chosen from the 1st prize winner in each of the categories and as well as receiving the accolade of ‘Mountain Safety Council Photographer of the Year’ will win a prize pack including a year’s subscription to Wilderness magazine.
Categories
There are 3 categories into which you can enter a maximum of 3 photos across all categories. Entries will be judged:
Category 1: Scenic
Capture some of New Zealand’s spectacular scenery be it alpine, beach, mountains or ocean there are a wealth of opportunities to photograph in the outdoors. Photos may include people but try and avoid ‘holiday snap’ type photos.
Category 2: Training
We are particularly interested in photos showing MSC training in action i.e. scenes from Firearms, Avalanche & Alpine, Bushcraft, First Aid and Abseiling courses especially where an instructor is demonstrating something of interest. (Please ensure that the photograph is technically correct i.e. the correct method of river crossing is used as depicted in the Bushcraft manual, or that safety glasses and earplugs are used in a shooting range photo etc.)
Category 3: Fun in the Outdoors
We are looking for photos of people taking part in any outdoor activity and obviously having a lot fun doing it. Photographs will be judged with weighting given to: subject (25%), creativity (50%), photographic quality (25%).
How to enter:
Please email your photos to: marketing@mountainsafety.org.nz and type MSC Photo Competition 2011 in the subject line.
In your email, please include your name, telephone number, address and a caption for each photo which must list the location, date and the names of the people featured.
Closing date:
Closing date for entries is 5pm, Friday 27 January 2012.
Competition Rules:
1. This competition is open to all Mountain Safety Council members.
2. An entrant may not submit more than three photographs across the categories.
3. A photograph may only be entered into one category.
4. Photographs must be supplied electronically as a high resolution (300dpi) JPEG image.
5. Whilst cropping and minor alterations are acceptable, trick photos or heavily or overtly ‘photoshopped’ images are not in keeping with the spirit of the competition and therefore not permitted.
6. All photos submitted must be your own work and not infringe the copyright of any other party.
7. If people appear in your photograph it is assumed that you have obtained their express permission to take the photograph and that you have informed them that you are submitting the photo for a competition where the image may be used in future publicity and you accept liability in the event that a complaint is made.
8. Only photos taken in New Zealand will be accepted.

10. Please ensure photos do not depict anything of an illegal or unnecessarily dangerous activity.
11. The entry must be submitted as requested with all required information and in accordance with the competition rules.
12. The lodging of any entry will be deemed as acceptance of the rules of the competition.
13. It is the condition of this competition that images will be retained by Mountain Safety Council and may be used in any Mountain Safety publication or publicity without charge. The photographer retains copyright and will be credited where the photograph is used.
14. No late entries will be accepted.
15. Prizes may be changed or substituted for an equal or higher value without notification.

Judging:
1. The MSC Marketing Manager shall appoint three judges for the purposes judging the photographic competition.
2. Photographs will be judged anonymously (i.e. your name won’t be attached to the photos the judges see).
3. Photographs will be judged with weighting given to: subject matter (25%), creativity (50%), photographic quality (25%).
4. First, second and third placings will be awarded for each category with an overall supreme winner chosen from the three 1st placed winners of each section.
5. Judges may confer with each other while selecting winning entries and their majority decision will be final. In the event of any dispute the Marketing Manager’s decision is final.
