Becoming an Instructor

Overview
MSC has its own training, assessment, certification and re-validation process for volunteer instructors.

The Role of the Instructor
An MSC instructor is a representative of MSC. Using their outdoor skills and knowledge, instructors may:

  • Instruct on courses for the public, organised and run by a MSC branch
  • Make presentations to community groups such as tramping clubs, youth organisations, and schools
  • Promote and encourage safe practices in outdoor activities through issuing information and participating in community events
  • Train other volunteer instructors

Disciplines
Instructors hold warrants of appointment in at least one of the following disciplines:

  • Abseil
  • Alpine
  • Avalanche
  • Bushcraft
  • Firearms
  • HUNTS
  • Outdoor First Aid
  • Outdoor Leader (ODL)
  • Outdoor Safety Management
(instructors must be a MSC instructor in another discipline first, or hold an equivalent outdoor instruction qualification).

How to Become an Instructor
Potential instructors must apply for membership at their local MSC branch. They must demonstrate that they have the preliminary knowledge, skills and experience required to become an instructor.

Excluding Firearm instructors, new MSC members must complete the Outdoor Leader qualification before moving on to further qualifications in other disciplines. Donating volunteer time is regarded as a return for the free training and assessment provided by MSC.
