Course Summary - River Safety

This course is aimed at all who may travel in or across river or stream beds while travelling in the NZ outdoors. It will include river crossing techniques and river dynamics.

Prerequisites:

  • you must be 18 years of age (or 14 years of age if attendance is agreed by a guardian)

  • you be physically capable of walking on rough riverbed surfaces with a full pack for approximately 1- 2 hours.

Learning outcomes:

On completion, the participant will:

  • be able to understand basic river dynamics and hazards.
  • know the basic safety rules for assessing whether it is safe to cross a river or stream.
  • know that it is often right to choose not to cross.
  • be able to judge where it is safest to cross.
  • be able to organise clothing and equipment for travel/river crossing.
  • be able to use an approved method for solo crossing (if alone)
  • be able to use an approved mutual support method.
  • know how to float and recover if swept away
  • know how to self-release from a trapped pack.
  • know how to safely retreat during a crossing if necessary.
  • understand how to manage a group in and around waterways.

Assessment:

The course does not have a formal assessment, but the participants will receive a MSC Course Attendance Certificate.

Instruction:

The course will be instructed by an MSC Instructor, qualified to Bush 1 level or above.

Duration:

1 x pre-course session of 2 hours and or 1 field day.
