Whakatūpato Firearms Safety Training

The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC) has been delivering firearms safety information, training and testing throughout New Zealand for more than 40 years.

Whakatūpato meaning 'take care' is one of the programmes on offer and is a joint venture between the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council, New Zealand Police and Iwi to provide comprehensive firearms training for Maori and other rural persons who for a number of reasons may not be able to access current firearms safety training.

The programme aims to:
1. promote the safe use of firearms in rural communities
2. encourage people to gain their firearms licence

The programme adopts MSC's model of local volunteers being trained and supported to deliver firearms safety training to their communities using MSC core course content and tailoring these resources and their delivery to meet the culture and insterests of such communities. Typically these programmes are held in the rural communities at appropriate venues such as marae and community halls.

Course format:
This course includes a presentation on firearms and safety, a DVD and informal discussion. Participants may sit the firearms safety test after the presentation if they wish.

The course covers:

  • The Arms Code
  • Firearms Safety
  • Firearms legislation
  • Types and use of firearms
  • Firearms handling
  • Transporting forearms
  • Safe hunting practices
  • Participants need not hold a firearms licence to attend the course as undertaking the firearms safety test (which enables participants to apply for a firearms licence) may be undertaken as part of the course.

Everyone from the community is welcome to attend, regardless of age, gender or whether you hold a firearms licence or not. Previous participants who have had a firearms licence for many years have said they found this course to be a useful refresher.

Participants will receive a pack and certificate for attending the programme.
