Course philosophy
To encourage and assist all who enjoy land-based outdoor adventure activities to develop their skills and knowledge and accept responsibility for their own safety.

Instructors
All New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (NZMSC) instructors have gone through a training and assessment process, have practical outdoors experience, and are genuinely interested in passing on their knowledge and skills. They hold warrants in the discipline.

Participant Ages
Some courses have a minimum age of 18 years, or 16 years if the student is accompanied by a participating parent or guardian.

Health and Safety
Participants are expected to take personal responsibility for their own safety, and follow instructions given by the Course Director.

Certificates
Certificates of attendance are issued. NZMSC does not offer a certificate of proficiency nor a leadership qualification.  New Zealand Qualification Authority unit standards are offered with the standard 2 day Outdoor First Aid course.

Registration
Each Branch will advise you on course registration, fees, refunds, transport and required gear.
