COURSE OUTLINES

NZMSC Courses

A range of courses including 2-hour courses, 2-day and 5-7 day courses.

These are suggested course outlines and facilitators may wish to modify them to suit their participants requirements. The courses are based on the NZMSC training principles.

Short Courses

New learner

This 2 hour course gives a brief introduction to risk management. Topics include why we manage risk, an overview of risk management terms, the review of a legal case study and the completion a basic risk management planning process as applied to an activity. Participants then review their organisations programme safety against accepted best practise.

Suitable for anyone wanting to understand the basic concepts behind risk management and why it's important to manage risk.

2 Day Courses

TopEmergency preparedness

A 2 day course focussed on emergency response systems, incident management and the follow up to serious incidents. This course is for outdoor leaders and senior staff/managers of outdoor based programmes.

Leadership

A 2 day course which focuses on leaders in the outdoors and how to manage risk. Course covers leader competence, leadership styles, risk management tools (SAP & RAMS form). The course is based around participants running activities and leading parts of a group expedition including a crisis scenario.

Risk Management: The Basics

A 2 day course for people associated with safety in the outdoors/outdoor programmes e.g. teachers, instructors, managers, school principals, etc. This course will give people a basic understanding of risk management principles and how they are applied in a practical setting.

5-7 Day Courses

Risk Management: Comprehensive

This course will give participants a solid understanding of current risk management practices. The course combines theory with a strong in-the-field hands on leadership and crisis management practice. Participants will become familiar with the principles and concepts in the 'Outdoor Safety - risk management for outdoor leaders' manual.
