Know before you go

Welcome to the
New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC)

MSC is a national organisation with a mandate from our member organisations to encourage safe participation in land-based outdoor activities.

We facilitate the setting of standards, offer training, create and distribute resources, lead public awareness campaigns and foster positive support in the community so that more people can discover and enjoy New Zealand's outdoors safely.

Outdoor Safety Code

The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council encourages the use of the Outdoor Safety Code across all outdoor activities, sports and recreations.

Tell someone your plans

Although most trips into the outdoors go without a hitch, you need to be fully prepared so that if the unexpected happens there are appropriate measures in place to recognise when there is a problem, alert the appropriate authorities and, if necessary, enable rescuers to find you quickly.

The New Zealand Outdoors Intentions process (endorsed by
New Zealand's search and rescue agencies) provides three simple options that enable you to 'tell someone' all the details about your land-based trip into the outdoors.

Safety is your responsibility.

Tell someone your plans – it may save your life.
