Planning Key to Safe Easter Tramping
Media Release
NZ Mountain Safety Council (MSC)is reminding trampers to factor in autumn conditions when planning outdoor adventures for Easter weekend.
“With the end of daylight savings and changeable autumn weather, you need to prepare differently if you’re heading out for a hike or tramp over the long weekend,” says MSCChief Executive Mike Daisley.
April brings shorter days, cooler temperatures, more rain and wind, and the chance of snow at higher elevations.
Autumn conditions can turn an easy trip into a more challenging one. So, if you’re heading out this Easter, consider shorter trips, avoid tracks with unbridged rivers and steer clear of alpine areas unless you have the skills and experience for these environments,– says Daisley.
MSC reminds trampers to dress in warm layers and pack for colder, wetter weather. This includes a waterproof rain jacket, a warm hat and gloves. When selecting clothing, choose breathable, lightweight and quick drying fabrics, like synthetics and wool.
“Leave your cotton and denim clothing at home,” says Daisley. “When these fabrics get wet, they suck heat from your body. At the very least, they’ll make you cold and miserable. At worst, you could get hypothermia.”
Plan My Walk, MSC’s free planning tool, helps trampers prep are effectively and make informed decisions about their trips. The free app and website includes detailed track descriptions, weather forecasts and warnings, track alerts, and customisable gear lists, conveniently in one place.
“If the forecast looks unfavourable, change your plans,” says Daisley.“When you’re out on the track, monitor the conditions and be prepared to switch to your backup plan if the weather deteriorates.”
Trampers should always carry essential emergency gear, including a head torch, an emergency shelter and a reliable communication device, like a personal locator beacon (PLB)or satellite messenger.
“If there’s any doubt about the weather, or your personal fitness and preparedness, postpone your trip,”says Mike.“It’s tempting to squeeze one last trip in for the season, but your priority should be to make it home safely.”
