NZ Mountain Safety Council (MSC) is excited to announce that Plan My Walk trip planning tool has achieved over 10,000 user reviews of tracks, huts and campsites, boosting outdoor safety for hikers and trampers across Aotearoa.

The milestone follows an ambitious summer campaign and competition encouraging hikers and trampers around the motu to share their experiences on the MSC trip planning tool.

Between 1 December 2024 and 30 April 2025, over 430,000 people used Plan My Walk, logging over 3,000 new reviews. This brought the total to 10,153 reviews by the end of the 5-month period.

MSC Chief Executive Mike Daisley says the response from the outdoor community was outstanding.

We’re delighted that outdoor enthusiasts embraced the challenge, and we want to thank everyone who has left a Plan My Walk review. By sharing your experiences, you’re helping others prepare better and stay safe in the outdoors.

Although the competition has ended, MSC is urging adventurers to keep up the momentum.

“Our research shows that reviews are highly valued by Plan My Walk users and have a real impact on outdoor safety, so please, keep them coming,” says Mike.

Plan My Walk supports hundreds of thousands of Kiwis and visitors to plan safer trips every year. The free app and website include essential safety information on over 3,000 tracks, huts and campsites. This covers weather forecasts and warnings, alerts, gear lists, and an easy-to-use trip planning feature.

What Makes a Great Review?

  • Reflections: Describe your experience and any learnings. What worked well?  What would you do differently next time? Perhaps you'd walk the route anticlockwise, take different gear, like walking poles, or use different footwear.
  • Context: Is your review about a walk you did in the blazing sun with a group of children? Perhaps it was in the middle of winter with a group of alpine experts.
  • Photos: Add photos that show the terrain, any tricky areas on the track, river crossings, or parts that you found surprising or challenging.
